The open source personal AI agent
Calabrass runs on your own Windows machine. Chat with any model, let agents work in your folders, and connect tools through MCP. No cloud account, and no data leaves your computer.
Windows 64-bit installer. Per-user install, no admin prompt.
Bring your own keys
Add any OpenAI-compatible endpoint or Google Gemini. There are no built-in providers and no keys in the repo.
What is Calabrass?
Calabrass is a local-first, single-user AI assistant. It combines a chat interface, an agent that can use tools for files, the web and desktop automation, a workspace-aware file context, and a Model Context Protocol host, all in one native Windows app. Your chats, providers and workspaces live in a local database that you own.
Everything a personal agent needs
A fast chat interface on top of a Go backend that does real work on your machine.
Watch the agent work
Replies stream token by token, and each tool call appears as a step in a collapsible trace, so nothing happens out of sight.
- Reasoning streamed on its own channel
- Switch models in the middle of a chat
- Chat titles generated for you
Files become artifacts
Anything the agent writes lands in a side panel. Preview rendered Markdown, copy it, or download it with one click.
- Rendered Markdown preview
- Copy and download from the panel
- Open from any chat
A workspace for every project
Point the agent at a folder and it reads and writes files there with full context. Add a Git remote and clone it straight into the workspace.
- Context files per workspace
- Git and GitHub clone built in
- Recent chats listed per workspace
Agents with a role
Give an agent its own prompt, mode, MCP servers and models. Its prompt replaces the global system prompt whenever you pick it.
- Build or Plan mode
- Default and fallback model
- Choose which MCP servers it can use
Extend it with MCP connectors
Calabrass hosts MCP servers as child processes. Two ship with the installer, off by default, and you can add your own by path.
- excel-mcp for Excel workbooks
- win-control-mcp for windows, keyboard, mouse and screenshots
- One toggle to enable each connector
Providers you control
Save a base URL and API key for each provider. Switch one off and its models leave the picker instantly, without deleting anything.
- Live model list from every provider
- Native Gemini adapter
- Keys stay in your local database
Schedules that run themselves
Set a prompt to run on a timer. Calabrass runs the agent for you, such as checking today's mail and summarizing the important messages.
- Cron-style tasks
- Enable or pause with a toggle
- See when the next run happens
Talk with Cal Live
Speak instead of typing. Transcripts land in the composer, ready to send. Cal Live is in beta.
- Mistral or Groq Whisper speech-to-text
- Push-to-talk or voice activity detection
- Bring your own voice key
Your account stays local
Create an account on first launch. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt, and the API listens only on 127.0.0.1, so nothing is exposed to the network.
- 30-day sign-in tokens
- Data in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Calabrass
- Uninstall keeps your data by default
Agent loop
It plans, calls tools and keeps going until the task is finished.
Web access
Built-in web_search and fetch_url let the agent look things up.
Desktop automation
Open apps and run shell commands with open_app and run_shell.
read_filewrite_filelist_filesglobgreprun_shellopen_appweb_searchfetch_urlFrom download to first chat

Local-first, and growing
Everything you make stays in your data folder, apart from the source checkout.

A Wails desktop shell with a per-user installer.
macOS and Linux
Wails supports both, and builds are on the list.

Custom tools, plus long-term context across sessions.
Questions, answered
Is Calabrass free?
Yes. It is open source under the MIT license. You only pay your model provider, if the model you choose is paid.
Do I need a cloud account?
No. You create a local account inside the app, and nothing is sent to a service of ours.
Where is my data stored?
In %LOCALAPPDATA%\Calabrass, including the database with chats, providers, connectors, agents, schedules and usage. Nothing you make is written into the source checkout.
Which models can I use?
Any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, such as Groq, OpenAI, Together, or a local vLLM or Ollama server, plus Google Gemini through a native adapter.
Does my code leave my computer?
Calabrass itself runs locally, and its API is bound to 127.0.0.1. When you use a hosted model, your prompt and any files the agent reads go to that provider. Use a local model server to keep everything on your machine.
What are the bundled MCP servers?
excel-mcp creates, reads and modifies Excel workbooks. win-control-mcp handles window management, keyboard and mouse automation, and screenshots. Both are opt-in and off by default.
Why does Windows show a SmartScreen warning?
The installer is not code-signed yet. Choose More info, then Run anyway. A signed installer is on the roadmap.
Which platforms are supported?
Windows today. macOS and Linux builds are planned.
